This November I have to do something I detest doing. I have to vote for someone that does not really represent my views. However, I must vote for him to help protect the future. Barack Obama is going to get my vote; not because he is the best candidate, but because the next president will be appointing one and possibly two new Supreme Court Justices. We have witnessed the demise of the court since the appointments of Alito and Roberts. All it will take is one more justice that allows their religious views to permeate their rulings and we will stand to lose much in terms of the personal freedoms that we have fought so hard to gain. The First Amendment is being trampled upon by the Bush administration everyday. The Supreme Court used to protect the First Amendment. That is not the case today. If John McCain becomes president – unless he totally goes against his party platform – he will most likely appoint someone in the vain of Thomas, Scalia, Alito or Roberts. Roe v. Wade may be overturned. Prayer will become more prevalent in public schools. Federal funding will continue to be used to finance faith based initiatives. Evolution, and all science for that matter, will continue to erode from our educational system and be replaced with untested religious claims and superstitions. And so on… In order to try to prevent the above nightmare from happening I will vote for Barack Obama and hope that his embrace of religion and ongoing shunning of secularists is more for show to get votes than his actual position. Unless someone can provide a better alternative I encourage everyone who cares about their freedoms to do the same. This is not the time to stand on laurels and argue that we should vote for the best candidate. We need to protect our rights first. Comments? |
